After attending our fantastic event supported by Warwick Kickstart, The Family and Warwick Business school at the Shard a couple of months ago, it confirmed that the network around you is the most important thing for your business.
The motivational speaker, Jim Rohn, said that we are the average of the five people we spend the most time with. So ensure you surround yourself with the best!
Last summer I worked out of a co-working space called Hubud in Ubud, Bali which opened my eyes to a different culture of entrepreneurship. I was working for a Silicon Valley based startup doing a variety of different roles, from creating a marketing strategy to liaising with investors and advisors in Silicon Valley. However, everyone who worked at this space all came from a variety of different backgrounds from all over the world, some were bloggers, others were ecommerce experts but everyone had one thing in common which was the aim to build a successful business. The only thing which was different to the people I used to liaise with back home is that none of them wanted to sell their services to you and instead just wanted to help you in any way they can so that you can succeed. One of my friends, within three weeks of being in Bali was put in touch with the software engineer who made the Facebook messenger app, so the contacts to gain out there were vast!
So what is my point here?
Well, in the current day, there are a lot of people who are just worried about themselves and their success and neglect helping others. However, I believe that giving back to the wider community is incredibly important for entrepreneurs who want to make a difference. We need to create a global entrepreneurial environment that promotes generosity, giving back and working together. As Simon Sinek says “Leaders Eat Last” and if all CEO and executives put the people before the numbers then our working lives could become a hell of a lot more enjoyable. Leaders need to sacrifice themselves for others rather than the other way round.
Let’s create a culture where collaboration and giving back to others is second nature rather than a chore.
